Camp Pendleton: a coastal base the size of a county
Camp Pendleton is spread across many separate areas, each with its own cluster of barracks, dining facilities, offices, and shops. Distances inside the base can be significant, and a technician who is badged at one gate may drive a long way to the building. Mobilization planning should include in-base travel time, and escort assignments should be thought through for each area, not just at the main gate.
Climate is mixed: coastal fog near the ocean, hot dry weather in the inland valleys of the base. Equipment near the coast faces salt corrosion; equipment inland faces heat and dust. Barracks and dining halls are the workhorse buildings, with domestic hot water plants, kitchen exhaust and make-up air, walk-in coolers, and ice machines. Our kitchen ventilation and make-up air service is relevant to dining facilities. See also the Camp Pendleton bid-work page.
MCAS Miramar: hangars, flight-line support, and the inland heat
Miramar's inland location means warm summers and less marine moderation than the bay bases. Its mission is aviation, so the building mix includes hangars, aircraft maintenance shops, aviation support buildings, offices, and housing for personnel. Hangar heating and ventilation is a major category: huge volume, doors that open to the outside, and an exhaust and make-up air balance that has to account for maintenance activities.
Flight-line restrictions can limit when and where contractors work, including height limits for cranes near runways. Replacement of rooftop equipment on a building near the airfield requires early coordination for crane placement and any approvals the air station demands. Our crane and curb practices address the mechanics of replacement, but the airfield rules are the installation's to set. See the MCAS Miramar bid-work page.
Naval Base San Diego, Point Loma, and Coronado: salt air and piers
The bay installations are saltwater environments from the first day of a unit's life. Corrosion on rooftop packages, cabinet panels, fasteners, and condenser coils is the principal enemy, and coated coils, stainless hardware, and sloped, draining equipment pads are meaningful details rather than options. Piers, shops, and administrative buildings near the water see the harshest exposure.
These bases are also dense: older buildings, tight utility corridors, and mechanical rooms that were fitted around existing structures. Rigging in a tight mechanical room, replacing a hot water boiler in a basement, or removing an old chiller from a plant room built around it needs a plan before the work begins. Our boilers and hydronic heating and chillers and central plant services describe the technical work. Navy facilities also use a number of local and installation-specific procedures, so ask the host command which ones apply. See the Naval Base San Diego bid-work page.

Frequently asked questions
Is San Diego the largest federal HVAC market in Southern California?
It has the greatest concentration of Navy and Marine Corps installations in the region, so a large share of regional military facility work is here. Competition for that work is correspondingly intense.
How should salt air influence equipment selection near the bay?
Specify corrosion-resistant coatings, stainless hardware, and protected electrical enclosures, and plan for more frequent coil inspection and cleaning. A unit that is not designed for marine exposure will show corrosion early.
Can Davinci bid directly on a NAVFAC task order?
Only if it holds a seat on the vehicle that the task order is issued under or the solicitation is open to it. Otherwise the path is as a subcontractor to a vehicle holder. We confirm eligibility before pursuing.
