A walk-in cooler going down on a Friday night is one of the most expensive failures a kitchen or grocery operation can have — lost product, an emergency service call, and possibly a health-code issue if it's not caught fast. Most of the time, though, the unit gave warning signs for weeks before it actually quit. Here's what to watch for.
1. Longer, more frequent run cycles
If the compressor seems to be running almost constantly instead of cycling on and off, the system is working harder to hit setpoint. That's usually low refrigerant charge, a dirty condenser coil, or a door seal that's no longer sealing.
2. Ice buildup where it shouldn't be
Frost on the evaporator coil, on the ceiling near the unit, or around the door frame usually points to a defrost cycle that isn't running correctly, a failing door gasket, or a refrigerant issue. Left alone, it gets worse and starts restricting airflow, which makes the whole problem compound.
3. Temperature swings instead of a steady hold
A well-running box holds within a couple of degrees of setpoint. If you're seeing swings — especially wider ones after doors have been open — that's often a sign the system doesn't have enough reserve capacity left. It's still cooling, just not with the margin it used to have.
4. Unusual noise from the condensing unit
Compressors and condenser fans are supposed to be fairly quiet and consistent. New rattling, grinding, or a noticeably louder hum is worth a diagnostic visit before it becomes a full failure — bearing wear and failing fan motors rarely fix themselves.
5. Water where it doesn't belong
Water pooling near the unit, on the floor inside the box, or dripping from the ceiling usually means a clogged or frozen condensate drain. It seems minor until it isn't — a blocked drain line can back up into the evaporator pan and accelerate frost buildup, which circles back to warning sign #2.
Why this matters for product safety, not just comfort
Unlike an office HVAC system where a slow decline mostly means people are uncomfortable, a slow decline in a walk-in means product temperature is drifting — which is a health-code and liability issue, not just an inconvenience. Catching these signs early is the difference between a scheduled repair and an emergency call plus a walk-in full of product that has to be thrown out.
